Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery
Mini Gastric Bypass, also known as Single-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass, is an effective and well-established procedure that combines some of the properties of a gastric sleeve and a standard gastric bypass. The mini-gastric bypass is a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. The process shrinks your stomach, limiting the amount of food you can eat. By bypassing up to 6 feet of the intestines, this procedure also reduces food absorption.
The stomach is divided with a laparoscopic stapler. The majority of the stomach is no longer attached to the esophagus and will no longer receive food creating a new, much smaller, and shaped like a small tube stomach. The remainder of the intestines will then be attached to the new stomach. Food passes through 2 to 7 feet of the intestines from your small tube-like stomach, where it resumes the normal digestive process in the remaining intestine.
Compared to Gastric bypass surgery, mini-gastric bypass surgery is a faster procedure and less invasive resulting in faster recovery and lesser risk while expecting a weight loss of 60% – 80% of a patient’s excess weight.

How Does Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Work?
Compared to Gastric Sleeve – Both procedures reduce the size of the stomach, which restricts the food intake. With the mini-gastric bypass surgery, the size of the stomach is reduced by bypassing a large part of the small intestines, keeping the stomach in place. Nevertheless, the gastric sleeve reduces the size of the stomach by permanently removing about 80% of it.
Compared to Gastric Bypass – The mini-gastric bypass is an alternative to the traditional gastric bypass in performing the procedure. The results with the mini-gastric bypass and the conventional gastric bypass are similar. Nevertheless, patients who are experiencing GERD or acid reflux should opt for gastric bypass instead. Because the mini-gastric bypass procedure is less intestinal rerouting and doesn’t transform the digestive system dramatically, making the process much less invasive, the mini-gastric has a slightly shorter recovery time with lesser risks.
Mini Gastric Bypass Weight Loss Expectations
The amount of weight you will lose will depend on a multiple of factors. These factors include diet, exercise, lifestyle, and your overall commitment. Most patients lose weight rapidly within the first six months after the surgery.
Considering that a patient is compliant, here’s the expected weight loss post-operative.
The weight loss in pounds (lbs) differ. Excess weight is the current weight, less the patient’s weight based on BMI
Mini Gastric Bypass Advantages and Disadvantages
How the Mini Gastric Bypass is Performed
Before the surgery, the patient is given general anesthesia, which keeps them asleep and pain-free.
An endotracheal tube is inserted into the windpipe to allow breathing during surgery.
At Be Slim Bariatrics, our patient’s safety is our top priority. Before the surgery, a series of lab tests will be conducted to make sure that your body is ready for the surgery. You will meet with many members of the medical team and have a chance to speak to your board-certified bariatric surgeon from the Tijuana team to ask questions. Our staff will perform a leak test as well prior to your discharge for patient quality assurance.
